The song was written in 1985, after the Chinese government had signed the Sino-British Joint Declaration with the United Kingdom for the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. Many people at the time began to be panic towards the change of political governance of Hong Kong in the future.

 

The song reminds Hong Kong people of the difficulties and changes that they had gone through in the previous years to achieve the success in the 80s. It emphasizes the “Hong Kong spirit” of being tough and perseverance. The lyrics carry a message that encourage the people to hold on with the spirits and be strong to face the challenge yet to come.
